Preps.com over the years has followed the Duquesne football program closely and most recently hosted the King of The Spring 7 on 7 Invitational at Rooney Field. Coach Schmitt and the rest of the staff have always been a great resource for our organization, so when we heard former Monessen playmaker, Chavas Rawlins, was joining the Dukes this fall, we were excited for the emerging FCS program that continues to land high profile D1 transfers.
In the past when a Western PA kid chose to leave his respective school for personal reasons, you typically saw California University of Pennsylvania (CAL U) or Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in the headlines. Although these D2 powerhouses continue to land top prospects, it’s been schools like Duquesne and Robert Morris that some of these transfers have chosen instead.
With the opportunity to still play at the D1 level, players like former Ohio State Buckeye, Dorian Bell, and ex Penn State signal caller, Paul Jones, have chosen to continue there collegiate careers at these local FCS programs.
Now with three high profile transfers, in All American Dorian Bell, transfer Chris Johnson from University of Florida, and recently added Chavas Rawlins from West Virginia, the Dukes look to reclaim the top spot in the Northeast conference and find there way into the FCS playoffs.
Chavas Rawlins, who went to WVU as a early enrollee has all the tools to allow the Dukes to pick and choose where they want to play him this fall. With a wide open quarterback battle with Marty Mitchell, Mike LePreste, and Montour grad Dillon Beuchel. Schmitt has a decision to make as to whether or not he wants to throw Rawlins in the hunt or play him at a more natural position as either a safety or wide receiver.
Whatever the Duquesne staff does with Chavas, they certainly have made a great acquisition and should enjoy fitting him in with his position versatility. Preps.com will continue to follow the Dukes and keep you updated throughout the season. Below is a highlight tape of Rawlins Junior year we made a year ago. Enjoy
