Since the first days of Preps.com we’ve had a love/hate relationship with the University of Pittsburgh football program and their fans.  We were the first to call out the program when it leaked that their recruiting efforts for local star, Dravon Henry were average at best.  However, we also were the ones that applauded the signing of standout under the radar recruits like Titus Howard and James Conner.  With all that said, it’s time for us to give credit, where credit is due.

After receiving the message from Kevin Givens that he had just verbally committed to the University of Pittsburgh, we could do nothing but applaud the programs efforts.  With all the hoopla around James Franklin coming in and vowing to dominate the state it seemed like Paul Chryst and his cerebral approach was going to be overshadowed.

It’s early in the game, but with the verbal commitment of Givens, Chryst continues to lurk around quietly snatching up the areas top talent.  With players like Alex Bookser and Rori Blair headed to Oakland this summer, don’t be surprised to see a program that has the opportunity to see young local talent play early at a high level again.

As much hype that was surrounded around Christian Hackenberg and his first season as the leader of Penn State, it would be hard not to argue that the best freshmen college football players in the state of PA weren’t western pa natives, Tyler Boyd and James Conner.

With Alex Bookser suiting up for the Panthers this fall, Chryst has in our eyes one of the best lineman prospects we’ve seen in years.  The hardest decision for Chryst this summer may be whether or not to put Bookser on the defensive side of the ball and carry the torch once held by 3 star recruit Aaron Donald or let him battle with other local talents, Adam Bisnowaty and Dorian Johnson for a tackle position.

If Chryst decides to leave Bookser on the offensive side of the ball, he still has pass rushing maniac Rori Blair to depend on to apply pressure on the quarterback.  Although Blair clearly needs to put on a few pounds, Pitt doesn’t have a pass rusher on their roster with his upside.  Blair shows the ability to do things as a pass rusher that just can’t be taught and if he has a great summer in the weight room, could come in right away causing havoc in the oppositions backfield.

When you start to add guys like Wisconsin transfer Reggie Mitchell, and Sto Rox alum Dontez Ford, along with all the returning players such as Todd Thomas, Manasseh Garner,  and of course the notorious “Bout Dat Crew” you start to scratch your head and wonder, “Who is dominating the state?”

To be fair, sources have said that although Penn State  liked Givens, they didn’t think he fit their defense, but it raises the question of whether or not Penn State is even in the position to dominate the state.  With Sterling Jenkins, Jordan Whitehead, and John Reid priority guys for PSU, clearly Penn State has positioned themselves to pick up the highest rated players, but as we all know, rankings don’t always add up to production on the field.  With more of a focus on a national recruiting strategy, when you start to break down the numbers, and current roster, Franklin may want to rescind those words and just say dominate in recruiting.

Picking up underrated guys like Kevin Givens, who from all of our evaluations was the best linebacker in the state by a long shot.  Pitt could quietly become the program that is dominating the state, by having guys that although may not have 5 star ratings off the field, put up 5 star production on the field, similar to recent standouts Aaron Donald, Tyler Boyd, and James Conner.

We’ll continue to follow Pitt vs. Penn State recruiting and give you our tidbits on the “Chase to Dominating the State”
