Preps.com released an article a few weeks back applauding the Temple staff for reeling in under the radar prospect Troy Simon, unfortunately we jumped the gun and Simon still hadn’t made the decision to join “Team 412″ team member Delvon Randall in the “city of brotherly love”.  Finally, we get the opportunity to talk about the new energetic staff lead by head coach Matt Rhule after Gateway standout, Anthony Davis made his decision to continue his football career with the Temple Owls.

To some, the commitment from one of the top defensive backs in the northeast was a head scratcher, but those familiar with recent hires by Rhule, knew it was inevitable.  So how does Temple pull in a guy that boasted offers from a number of BCS programs?  After being mistreated by his alma mater Gateway Senior High School, Terry Smith resigned as Head Football Coach and AD and assumed the role as wide receiver coach and Temple Ambassador in Western Pa, this past winter.  Smith immediately hit the ground running signing Gateway sleeper Todd Jeter and shortly after receiving a verbal commitment from Gateway play-maker Delvon Randall.

The Preps.com staff is no stranger to Smith and his work ethic, and won’t be surprised to continue seeing him stealing local talent from University of Pittsburgh and others.  Relationships that date back to almost a decade ago, now give Rhule and his Temple staff a shot at Western Pa kids.   It’s all fun and games until you see a prospect turn down offers from the likes of Michigan and Penn State, just to name a few.

Although Davis has been fairly low key during the summer camp circuit, he is without a doubt one of the most talented defensive backs in the region and plays with an intensity that can’t be taught.  Thought by many as the most talented player in the Gateway secondary, Davis has a mix of size, athleticism, and strength.  Having played since his sophomore year, now it’s the seniors time to shine, and don’t be shocked to see the “Ringer” knock a few players out.

Preps.com will continue to follow Temple’s recruitment of Troy Simon, and keep you posted with any updates.  Below is Anthony’s junior highlight tape.  Enjoy
