It seems like it was only yesterday when we first had the opportunity to see South Allegheny alum Jesse James in person at a 7 on 7 at Gateway High School a few years back. The first thing that came to mind when we saw him perform was “no brainer.” The 6’7 260 tight end got in and out of his cuts so elegantly and showed such exceptional ball skills, we had no idea how he only received 3 stars from all the scouting services.
Three years later, the goliath of a pass catcher is one of new signal callers, Christian Hackenberg and Tyler Ferguson’s main target’s and looks to prove to the nation that Penn State football is going nowhere. With a head coach familiar with stand out tight end’s, Penn State fans can’t help but compare James to another guy that plays his position further up north in the league, that O’Brien also groomed.
Coming off an impressive freshman campaign, James looks to solidify himself as one of the Big Ten’s top tight ends. What’s so impressive about James is the fact that he moves like a pure receiver in his 6’7 260 frame and continues to develop as a blocker. Having the opportunity to evaluate both young stars Jermaine Gresham and Rob Gronkowski, James favors Gresham more, due to his silky smoothness.
Penn State faces an uphill battle for years to come, but with standout prospects like James staying loyal to his Penn State pledge, fans in State College still have something to be happy about in the valley. Preps.com will continue to follow James and Penn State football throughout the season.
