Seems like it was just yesterday when Preps.com (formally known as Finestpreps.com) released our first highlight tape on youtube and facebook and began the journey we’ve embarked on the last 3 years.  During this time we’ve had the opportunity to see some of the countries finest prospects and uncovered various diamonds in the roughs.

Our first year on the job, we were introduced to a Perry team that eventually ended up winning the Pittsburgh City League championship, that was absolutely loaded with talent.  Led by a lefty gunslinger that went by the name of “Goater” we were  fascinated by the level of talent this  city league program possessed.

After being introduced to Greg Mcghee “Goater” we couldn’t help but notice his hard working partner in crime, Devin Ghafoor.  This initiated one of our many attempts to promote underrated city league prospects to various FBS programs with  no success.  Coaches made pretty much every excuse in the book, and we were absolutely devastated by their ignorance. We had seen these guys compete with the “D1” prospects these coaches fought for in recruiting battles and thought it only made sense to snatch up comparable athletes at a premium with way less fan fare.

Fast forward three years, a couple post season awards, and you have the Preps.com staff gloating like an investor thats just got rich off a  penny stock.   Ghafoor, who ended up attending D2 program Edinboro, finished the season as the teams third leading tackler, second in interceptions, and first in pass breakups, along with walking away with 2nd team All PSAC West honors and his teams most outstanding defensive player award.  Not too shabby for a guy many coaches thought didn’t have the tools to play at the D1 level.

“Goater” at FCS program Howard, hit the ground running bringing in the Rookie of the Year honors his freshman year and after being sidelined over compliance issues his sophomore year, bounced back his junior year and won the MEAC Offensive player of the year award.  Rushing for 896 yards, while passing for 2,379 and 16TD, Mcghee led the league in total offense and ranked nationally in the category.

With the same continued success next year, these two city league stars may have the opportunity to defy all odds and go from underrated high school city league prospects, to having a shot to play at the next level.  With Mcghee clearly the MEAC ‘s best dual threat quarterback and Ghafoor’s undeniable versatility and tenacity, don’t be shocked if this isn’t the last news clippings you see from this duo.
