Today the 2014 Pennsylvania Team for the Big 33 Classic was announced and it didn’t take long for the internet to start buzzing about the selections.  Let’s face it, there are going to be kids that deserve to be in the game that aren’t going to make it due to the number’s crunch.  Let’s take a look at the team position-by-position.

QUARTERBACKS: J.J. Consentino (Central Catholic) and Lenny Williams (Sto-Rox).

Cleezy’s Take:  I thought the top two candidates would be J.J. Consentino and Andrew Ford.  Ford opted to enroll at Virginia Tech early and to me, that probably made the choices much more easier.

RUNNING BACKS : Dravon Henry (Alquippa), Tyler Burke (Coatesville), and Terry Swanson (Alquippa)

Cleezy’s Take: It’s rare that you see two running backs from the same team make the PA Big 33 team, but Henry and Swanson pulled it off.  Burke is a completely different back from those two due to his size (6’4″, 240).  One has to wonder how close Chase Edmonds from Central Dauphin East was to making this team.

WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT END: Dequan Ware (Harrisburg), Thadd Smith (Cardinal O’Hara), Troy Apke (Mt. Lebanon), Montae Nicholson (Gateway)

Cleezy’s Take: Ware, who came into the 2013 season a little bit less unknown than the others, certainly earned his place at the table.  It’s a nice variety of wide receivers and you hope that they all are able to participate in the game.

TIGHT ENDS: Alec Bloom (Legion Valley), Evan Butts (Episcopal Academy)

Cleezy’s Take: I’m not sure how much the tight ends will see the ball this game, but the PA team has a couple of big targets.  The biggest happens to be the 6’7″, 240 pound Bloom from Legion Valley.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Mike Grimm (Bethel Park), Ben Huss (Upper St. Clair), Noah Beh (Scranton Prep), Cale Costy (Thomas Jefferson), Josh Walmer (Parkland), Eric Gallo (Council Rock South)

Cleezy’s Take: I doubt there are any real complaints here.  They have some big-time recruits in Beh, Grimm, and Gallo.

DEFENSIVE LINE: Trey Klock – Lower Dauphin,Luke Carrezola – Neshaminy, Jawan Hill – Mckeesport, Alex Bookser – Mt. Lebanon, David Shaw – Spring Grove, Mitchell Sweigert – Penn Manor

Cleezy’s Take: This is a very stong line.  Klock will give PA a very strong presence inside, with Carrezola and Bookser wreaking havoc from the defensive end spots. It’s a very strong unit.

LINEBACKERS: Zaire Franklin – LaSalle College,Chase Winovich – Thomas Jefferson,Niko Thorpe – Central Catholic

Cleezy’s Take: Absolutely no arguments here. Some of the defensive lineman picked actually played linebacker for their high school team.  The linebacker position is the strongest unit on the PA team. Franklin, Winovich, and Thorpe are all studs. Period.

DEFENSIVE BACKS: Tyree Spearman – Erie McDowell, De’Andre Scott – Imhotep, Tre Tarpley – Central Catholic, Marlon Tyree – Erie Cathedral Prep,Brandon Feamster – Downingtown East,Anthony Davis – Gateway.

Cleezy’s Take: This defensive backfield is what they call “NICE”.  There’s not one weak link in the unit as you have several playmakers that can play man-to-man defense at a high level.

Athlete – Rasaan Stewart – Perkiomien Valley

Kicker/Punter – Joe Julius – Julius was “money” for the the “Money Team” (a.k.a. Lower Dauphin) all year long.
