Several of the best high school games that will be played this weekend will take place in the Philadelphia Public and Catholic Leagues. You have a few rivalry games and one interstate game that should peak the interest of a lot of people in the Northeast region of the country.
WEST PHILADELPHIA (3-2) VS. MARTIN LUTHER KING (3-2)
The Public League AAA Division is a real competitive one and expect for this game to be real competitive as well. MLK has fired off three straight wins after dropping their first two games of the year. Their QB-to-WR combination of Joe Walker and Delane Hart is the deadliest in Southeastern Pennsylvania, bar none. The Speedboys from West Philly don’t pass much, so expect them to run the ball a lot as usualy this Saturday.
CENTRAL (2-3) VS. NORTHEAST (1-4)
One of the oldest rivalries in the public league has seen better days. Central has dropped their last two games while Northeast has won only one game so far this season. Walter Pegues of Central is one of the best all-purpose players in the Philly Public League. Northeast defeated Fels last week for their first win of the season.
FRANKFORD (2-3) VS. GEORGE WASHINGTON (2-3)
Forget the records, this is THE rivalry game in the public league year in and year out. Both teams may not be at the top of their game just year for this season, but there’s no question that neither team will have a problem getting up for this one. They both dropped their first three non-conference games before winning their last two games.
ST. JOSEPH’S PREP VS. ARCHBISHOP WOOD
Even though they are in different classes, Archbishop Wood (Philly Catholic League AAA) and St. Joseph’s Prep (AAAA) is like a heavyweight match-up. AW has opened up with five straight wins and has averaged over 40 points per game. None of their games have been close. SJP comes into the game 3-1 with their lone loss against Don Bosco Prep out of New Jersey. AW running back Jarret McClenton has rushed for over 440 yards and 9 rushing touchdowns in his first five games. St. Joseph’s Prep has gotten some steady play from quarterback Chris Smith. Their running game is spearheaded by Vince Moffett, De’Andre Swift, and Olamide Zaccheaus. Smith also adds to the running game as well. The very talented John Reid leads the SJP secondary. AW quarterback Tom Garlick hasn’t had to throw the ball much and has thrown for over 500 yards and 6 touchdowns. This IS the best match-up between two Philly area teams this weekend.
EASTERN CHRISTIAN ACADEMY VS. IMHOTEP CHARTER
Imhotep beat it’s opponent from last week 83-6 and Eastern Christian Academy beat their opponent 60-20. Both teams, due to interesting circumstances, both had bye weeks for week 6 before agreeing to play one another. Imhotep’s opponent, Delaware Valley Charter, had their whole team suspended due to a brawl took place during their week 5 game. ECA had nobody to play this week. Both head coaches are good friends who had originally decided never to schedule one another for a real game. Now, out of necessity, both find their teams playing one another in Philly this weekend. Imhotep is one of the top 5 teams in the state regardless of class with a number of standout players including athlete DeAndre Scott (30 plus offers), OL Aaron Ruff (Temple commit), WR D.J. Moore and RB Nasir Bonner (2015).ECA is one of the best teams in the country headed by big-time recruits such as QB David Sills (USC commit, 2015), WR Neiko Creamer (Tennessee commit, 2014), and Freddy Canteen (Michigan commit, 2014)
