The WPIAL’s class of 2014 is a deep class for prospects, with Division 1 talent scattered all throughout Western Pennsylvania. One athlete Finestpreps.com has been raving about is Shady Side Academy’s Dennis Briggs. We regarded Briggs as one of the most underrated players in the WPIAL who was flying way too far under the radar for our liking…. That is not the case anymore.
Briggs is a guy that can run the rock hard and get the tough yards you need. He possesses good speed and quickness that will translate well into the next level if a team needs him as a ball carrier. On the opposite side of the ball, he is a great cover safety that will accelerate to the line of scrimmage and punish a ball carrier. Dennis Briggs is a guy you would like to have on your team as he can do whatever you ask without hesitation if it is best for the team.
Pitt was at Shady Side Academy today to inform Dennis Briggs that he has received his first scholarship offer. Dennis’ head coach informed him of the news. Pitt likes Dennis as an athlete as of now, saying he can play safety or running back, depending on the depth of the roster in those positions.
Briggs was a prospect flying under the radar; the only junior day he attended was the University of Buffalo’s. He was invited to Temple’s junior day but he could not make the trip. He attended Pitt’s camp last year and plans to attend this year as well.
A major factor that Briggs wants in a college is to feel comfortable. He stated that a school in the northeast is most ideal for him and then went on to state that he is a city guy and likes the city of Pittsburgh.
“It’s one of the things I’ve been waiting for since I’ve been a freshman…. I didn’t even expect them to come today; I’m still on cloud nine. Its surreal to me, it means everything to answer your question, it’s a blessing.” That is what Briggs had to say after asking what it meant to him to have his first scholarship. As of now, it looks as though Pitt is in very nice position to land the Shady Side athlete.
A main goal Briggs has for this upcoming season is to win the conference, and compete in the playoffs. He also wants to take on a leadership role for his team and develop as a player.
We congratulate Dennis on receiving his first offer and plan to keep in touch with him throughout his senior season. Below are highlights of his junior year.
