FinestPreps has promised to deliver you some of the updates of the top high school football prospects in the Western Pennsylvania area!

Today we don’t disappoint as we heard of some excellent news regarding one of the athletes we’ve profiled over the past few months.

Shady Side Academy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) athlete Reggie Mitchell is one of the top “under-the-radar” athletes in the state of Pennsylvania for the 2012 recruiting class.

Blessed with tremendous footwork, it’s easy to see that Mitchell has a future at the defensive back position on the collegiate level.

Until today, Mitchell didn’t have any offers to play football at the next level.

That changed after he heard some good news today from two schools.

Who are the first teams that decided to join the mix for his services?

Mitchell is from Pennsylvania so it shouldn’t be suprising to anyone that he landed two offers from teams in that state.

The 6’0″, 175 pound athlete recently blew it up at the Duquesne and Villanova one day football camp in Pittsburgh, Pa.

It turns out he impressed coaches from both programs so much that both Villanova and Duquesne decided to extend him scholarship offers.

Villanova and Duquesne’s football programs are both members of Division I-AA (FCS).

Villanova is one of the nation’s premiere football programs in Division I-AA (FCS) football.

The Wildcats, led by head coach Andy Talley, won the FCS national championship in 2009 (Villanova 23–Montana 21).

Since moving to Division I-AA (FCS), Villanova has made seven playoff appearances and in recent years have established themselves as one of the top football programs in Division I-AA.

The Wildcats have also produced such famous NFL alumni such as Howie Long and Brian Westbrook.

Villanova has even entertained the possibility of joining the Big East and making the jump to Division I-A (FBS).

Whether or not the Wildcats will make the move is still up in the air.

When watching Mitchell’s highlight tape below–it’s easy to see how much potential the Shady Side standout has at the defensive back position because of his footwork.

When he lines up at the quarterback position, he uses those excellent feet to dance around opposing defenses with ease.

As a quarterback, the fleet-footed field general gashed opposing defenses to the tune of over 600 rushing yards last year.

He also threw for over 550 passing yards last year as well.

He’s also blessed with great instincts and ball skills as a defensive back.

Last season as a junior, he snatched up three interceptions for the Shady Side Indians.

When it comes to playing defensive back at the collegiate level, whether it be Division I-A or Division I-AA, players must have excellent footwork.

In that regard, Mitchell is very blessed to have that trait in abundance.

He’s still improving at the position and it will be exciting to see what other colleges decide to extend him offers in the recruiting process!
